‘BOO MINGS ...IT WILL GET HIM GOING’

- BY NEIL MOXLEY

STEVEN GERRARD has urged the Elland Road’s boo-boys to target Tyrone Mings once again – because it will bring out his Sunday best.

Aston Villa’s boss said the jeers of last year sparked a high-class display from the England centre-half.

Gerrard (above) says that he thrived off the pressure during his playing days – and so too should Mings.

“Tyrone should love running the gauntlet – that’s what it’s about when you’re a player. I loved it,” said Gerrard.

“Honestly, if I was Tyrone, I’d be really looking forward to it. I’d be hoping that they throw down the gauntlet again – because that should motivate him.

“Last year, he was outstanding up there. He coped with it perfectly, kept a clean sheet, put his chest out and walked out of Elland Road with three points.

“He’s been terrific of late. We can see him back close to his best.”

Mings (below), 29, was targeted last season after a shocking performance in the first of the two games between the clubs.

He was partly at fault for all of Leeds’ goals during an epic 3-3 draw – and then was subjected to near-the-knuckle jibes in the return fixture.

Gerrard says that Mings’ current form should ensure him a starting spot for Gareth Southgate in Qatar.

He said: “I watched the England games very closely. And there was one person on my mind in those games.

“I know exactly what Tyrone would have been thinking during those games. “If he brings his best attributes and keeps his form where it is in a back three, Tyrone can play in that team, I’m sure.

“And that’s what he should be thinking, too.”

Villa’s boss has made a significant U-turn since the opening week of the campaign.

Mings was stripped of the captaincy by Gerrard, with the armband being handed to John McGinn instead.

But Mings has arguably been Villa’s player of the season so far during a campaign that has largely failed to ignite.

Gerrard added: “I wanted Tyrone to focus on himself and take pressure off him. And I think he’s close to his best.”
