VAR fails are ‘only human’

- BY DAN LUDLAM

PATRICK VIEIRA has launched a surprise defence of Premier League officials and their errors.

The Crystal Palace boss was left visibly furious last weekend as Chelsea defender Thiago Silva escaped a red card for a blatant handball, before going on to assist PierreEmerick Aubameyang for the equaliser in the Eagles’ 2-1 home defeat.

But having had time to reflect, Vieira – never shy as a player to voice his thoughts to referees – believes shouting demands for improvements to the standard of officiating is a waste of breath, as VAR technology still requires human intervention.

Vieira explained: “Sometimes we forget that VAR is still just a human decision. You and I can watch the same images and still come to two different opinions.

“VAR is there to help, but it’s still a human decision – sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong. It’s really frustrating for us because in those situations it can change the game. But we just have to move on.”

Some managers have questioned why there isn’t more immediate communication between clubs and the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) after controversial calls. Vieira can’t see the point of it.

When asked whether more communication with the PGMOL would be beneficial, Vieira added: “I don’t think so.

“When decisions have been made on the field, that’s what you expect – decisions to be made.

“Afterwards, yes, you can have a conversation, you can apologise – but it doesn’t change anything.

“I think the referee and the VAR have made the decision and we just have to move on.”

Vieira will hope his side bounce back today – a weak result against Leeds would only ramp up the pressure, after Palace won just one of their opening seven league matches.
