He said: “Playing with him is beautiful, of course, because you play with the greatest player in the world. He helps you to improve every day.

“Leo was a really good person with me, he tried to help me be a better player and I always enjoyed playing with him because he could make the difference in every moment. I played with him, and against him for Sevilla. It was better with him!”

Lenglet’s availabili­ty in the summer was quickly seized upon by Tottenham boss Antonio Conte. And, while things didn’t go well against Manchester United in midweek in a game in which he was an unused substitute, the defender has still played his part in helping Spurs make their best start to a season in 59 years.

Despite that good run, though, the United defeat means they still haven’t beaten one of the Big Six this season, with a loss at Arsenal and draw at Chelsea also on their record so far.

Lenglet said: “The start of the season has been good, but we dropped points in three games against three big teams and we struggle against these types of teams. We have to improve on that to be a top team — that’s the next step, that’s how we’re working.

“Wednesday wasn’t a good day because we lost, but we are working on being better in these games. Without the ball we are the best team in terms of effort. We run a lot, we are aggressive, we help our team-mates, but we have to improve.”
