Mummies’ fury over childcare
MORE than 15,000 protesters staged the March of the Mummies yesterday, calling for government reforms on childcare costs.
Campaigners Pregnant Then Screwed organised thousands of parents and children across 11 UK cities to take part in the demos, including Labour MP Stella Creasy and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Joeli Brearley, who started the group in 2015 on being fired a day after revealing she was pregnant, said: “Our needs are being ignored and we’re being set up to fail. It’s impossible for most families to survive without two incomes.
“Yet we’ve created an environment that prevents many mothers from working, or working the hours that they want to.”
Ms Creasy said Rishi Sunak had made comments likening maternity leave to a holiday that reflect he “doesn’t really know what he’s talking about”.
She added: “We’ve got a cost of living crisis and an economy that isn’t growing. You can’t solve either of those challenges without investing in childcare.”
