Tax return vow comes back to haunt Rishi

- EXCLUSIVE BY NIGEL NELSON

MULTI-millionaire Rishi Sunak is being urged to fulfil his pledge to publish his tax return as he plots stinging the rest of us for money.

The new Prime Minister made the

vow during the summer’s Tory leadership contest against Liz Truss.

When asked by the BBC if he would reveal how much tax he paid if he became PM, he replied: “Yes.”

Lib Dem chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said: “Failing to keep that promise would risk doing even more damage to public trust in the

Conservative Party.” Mr Sunak is now in talks with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt over how to plug a £50billion black hole in Britain’s budget in time for their financial statement next month.

The big fear for the elderly is that Mr Sunak will renege on Ms Truss’s promise to increase their pensions next April by 10%, in line with inflation.

The PM could link payouts to earnings instead, which means increases would be capped at 5.5%.

Ex-pensions minister Ros Altmann said: “It is a matter of integrity that all past promises must be kept.”

Downing Street would not say if the PM will keep his tax vow but pointed to financial interests already declared.
