PHILLIPS TON AND KIWIS BOULT HOME
The Kiwis won by 65 runs
GLENN PHILLIPS’ century and a new ball masterclass from Trent Boult fired New Zealand to victory over Sri Lanka.
The win solidified the Kiwis’ spot at the top of Group 1.
Phillips was dropped on 12 and 45 before going on to make 104 as Sri
Lanka were made to rue a sloppy performance in the field.
His lone hand helped New Zealand recover from the loss of early wickets to post a total of 167-7 – and Sri Lanka were then blown away early on as Boult shone.
Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson said: “To see Glenn change the pressure and put it back on the opposition and get a hundred was remarkable – one of the best knocks I’ve seen, for sure.
“There’s a lot of cricket left, so, for us, it’s about focusing on the next game. As we have seen, it doesn’t matter who you play – anyone can beat anyone.”
New Zealand were reeling early on before Phillips took over, departing in the final over. But the damage had been done and Sri Lanka then found themselves 8-4 as Tim Southee started the procession before Boult (4-13) took over.
Sri Lanka were bundled out for
102 and skipper Dasun Shanaka said: “We started well, but there were a few dropped catches. We still have a chance of qualifying with two wins.”
