Tech out protection

- BY NIGEL THOMPSON

Taking your tech on holiday abroad is the norm nowadays – but how can you keep your devices safe from accidents and thieves? We’ve teamed up with Jon Miller from website MusicMagpie for handy hints on protecting phones, tablets and laptops on your travels…

Hot stuff

Just like people, a device can overheat in the higher temperatures encountered overseas, and slow down as it takes measures to cool itself.

Keep phones and tablets screen-down in the shade if you can and turn off apps and tools that you’re not using – such as wi-fi and GPS – as they will use unnecessary energy.

Water world 1

Many modern phones are waterproof but a dunking in the pool will likely wreck an older one.

Jon says: “Before heading to the pool, it is always worth putting your phone and other electronic devices in a plastic wallet to help avoid them getting wet.’’

A waterproof phone pouch can help keep your phone dry while out swimming or doing watersports but make sure it’s certified watertight.

Water world 2

So how waterproof is your kit? Lots of modern tech can withstand some water, but this doesn’t mean it should join you for a dip.

Jon explains: “For example, unlike some more recent models, the first-generation Apple Watch is only designed to be submerged in water for a maximum of 30 minutes.

“It’s a similar story with your headphones. If you want to listen to music at the pool, remember that your AirPods are water resistant, not waterproof. This means that while they can handle a little moisture, forgetting to take them out before you jump in could spell disaster.

Stolen memories

Research has found that one in five people have reported the loss of items valued over £100 while on holiday.

The obvious way to keep your tech safe is to try to leave your valuables in your room – especially if there is a safe. Jon says: “Both Androids and iPhones have apps that constantly track your phone and even allow you to block and hard lock your mobile. The services are easy to sign up to and can be a lifesaver if anything ever does go wrong, at home or abroad.”

Be sure and insure

It’s savvy to insure your devices while away – but before buying holiday insurance with device cover, check if your current home contents policy covers devices while abroad. What home contents policies cover varies from insurer to insurer.

If it doesn’t give device protection, it’s worth looking for a travel insurance policy that includes gadget cover.

Roaming empire

Many networks have reintroduced EU roaming charges due to Brexit so double-check if your phone contract still includes free roaming.

Jon says: “To help avoid unwanted fees, consider purchasing a pay-as-you-go SIM card that offers free roaming to use when you are away, or be sure to turn off your data and only use your phone when on wi-fi.”
