Top awards for your brilliant

THE Sunday Mirror won two top honours this week at the Press Awards, the newspaper industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

Amy Sharpe scooped the award for Interviewer of the Year (Tabloid) for her string of exclusives – including an inspiring front page with Dame Kelly Holmes who revealed to this paper that she is gay.

Amy also told the story of William Verden, 17, who was handed a “death sentence” after being refused a kidney transplant due to autism.

We followed William’s mother’s successful High Court fight and he eventually got his lifesaving operation in August.

Amy was also recognised for her interview with Michelle Antonio, the victim of racist abuse by EastEnders actress Katie Jarvis. Judges said the articles showed how “sensitive, in-depth interviews in tabloids can make news”.

The Sunday Mirror also won the Excellence in Diversity Award.

The Society of Editors judging panel honoured our campaign to fight for justice for LGBTQ+ servicemen and women dishonourably discharged due to their sexuality.

It also praised our investigation revealing a racist WhatsApp group in the Home Office, as well as our End Period Poverty campaign, which won the backing of celebrities including Mel B. And the panel commended our “commitment to inclusivity and diversity” in the newsroom and in our articles. The Sunday Mirror was also nominated in the Sunday Newspaper of the Year category again.

Editor Gemma Aldridge said: “These gongs are a fitting reward for the quality and varied journalism we strive to produce every week.”
