Great Reds European comebacks

- Istanbul, 2004-05 Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan

THE Italians raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time in the 2005 Champions League Final.

The game looked lost – but then Steven Gerrard’s header early in the second period inspired both the team and the Reds fans.

Liverpool went on to score twice in quick succession to level it up and force extra time.

It was ultimately to be settled on penalties, with Reds keeper Jerzy Dudek crowned the hero as Liverpool won their fifth European Cup (above).

Anfield, 2018-19 Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona HAVING lost the first leg 3-0, the hopes of reaching another Champions League final looked bleak against the might of Lionel Messi and Barcelona.

To make matters worse, Liverpool were also missing Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Stepping up was Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum, who etched their name into Liverpool folklore with two goals each – the decisive fourth goal coming from Origi. Liverpool went on to beat Tottenham in the final.

IN Jurgen Klopp’s first season, this extraordinary comeback was a sign of things to come.

Trailing 3-1 on the night, and 4-2 on aggregate, Liverpool needed three goals in the final half an hour to progress.

First, Philippe Coutinho struck in the 66th minute and then Mamadou Sakho headed home 11 minutes later to level the game at 3-3 and the tie at 4-4.

Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren was the Anfield hero as he headed home in the 91st minute to put Liverpool into the Europa League semi-finals.

They were to go on and lose the final against Sevilla, but the spectacular turnaround against Dortmund helped kick-off the Klopp era in style.
