LABOUR’S LOWEST TAX

Councils keep lid on household bills

KEIR Starmer today promises a “relentless” focus on improving lives if Labour wins power.

Writing for this paper, the party leader urges Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ease the council tax woe faced by millions as average bills soar this month by 5.1% to over £2,000. His party says of the 25 areas with the lowest council tax, 22 are Labour-run.

Of the 25 highest, none are Labour – while nine are Conservative. Mr Starmer said if in power, he would freeze council tax this year, paid for by a windfall levy on oil and gas firms.

A LABOUR government would freeze your council tax this year. More money in your pocket now – funded by a proper windfall tax on oil and gas giants, who have more cash than they know what to do with.

The choice to be made is very obvious to me. But Labour also has a long-term plan to give Britain its future back – knee-jerk sticking plaster solutions don’t cut it.

As a mission-driven government, there’ll be no wavering, distraction or being knocked off course. A relentless focus on improving people’s lives. Fairness at the core of every decision we make.

For example, I’ll close the non-dom tax loophole. If you live and work here, you’ll pay tax here. With that money, we’ll train a new generation of doctors and nurses, and fund breakfast clubs for every child.

Politics is about choices. And Rishi Sunak could make one today that will relieve the worry millions feel when the council tax bill lands on the mat.

There’s money on the table. People need support. I’m urging the PM to take our policy and freeze council tax this year. There’s no time for delay.
