If you feel like exploring further afield, we spent a delightful day at Powis Castle and Garden, on the outskirts of Welshpool. A medieval castle, fortress, grand country house and home of the Herbert family, the now Grade I listed castle is known for its Italianate terraces and Edwardian formal gardens, and its interiors filled
with world-class paintings and tapestries.
You can also sit back and wonder at the scenic Welsh countryside on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, a narrow gauge heritage railway built in 1903 which runs for eightand-a-half miles from Welshpool via Castle Caereinion to Llanfair Caereinion.
Or go west to the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, a slate quarry turned eco-centre demonstrating green ways of living with examples of energy saving buildings, interactive mechanics and a water-balanced hillside railway.
