Warner try that again, mate...

- BY RICHARD EDWARDS

AUSTRALIA named their batting line-up for the Ashes in midweek – and England won’t be losing much sleep over the list, unless Steve Smith is up to repeating his 2019 bonanza.

Smith scored an incredible 774 runs at an average of more than 110 when the Aussies last visited four years ago.

Only once, in his final innings at The Oval, did he fail to score at least a fifty.

But with the exception of Marnus Labuschagne – who bagged 353 runs at an average of fifty – the rest of the top order never quite caught fire.

In fact, David Warner endured a truly dismal Ashes summer that year.

The loudmouth Aussie opener scored just 95 runs in the whole series.

Stuart Broad had him on toast, dismissing him seven times in 10 innings.

Australian fans are split on Warner’s inclusion this time around – hardly surprising given he has scored just one century in his past 32 Test innings.

He will be joined on the plane by Travis Head, Usman Khawaja and Marcus Harris.

Head, who once spent a spell playing club cricket on the Isle of Wight, averaged just 27 four years ago.

Khawaja has also traditionally struggled in English conditions. He scored 122 runs in three matches in 2019 and in six Ashes Tests in England has only scored one fifty.

Harris, meanwhile, did not last the series when the two sides last clashed in Australia, getting dropped before the final Test.

Matt Renshaw (left) is the other frontline batsman on the list, and he could just as easily be lining up for England as Australia – both his parents are English and Renshaw was born in Middlesbrough before moving to New Zealand at the age of seven.

The 27-year-old has played 14 Tests for the Aussies but has never been able to nail down a place in the side. England’s bowlers should be licking their lips.
