but for Souness there is no such thing as a moral victory over England.

He snapped: “A defeat’s a defeat, especially against England.

“I played at Liverpool where there was a dressing room full of England internatio­nals, so there was a lot of p***-taking going on.

“We didn’t beat them too many times so I’ve got selective memory!

“I scored against Peter Shilton in 1986, but we lost 2-1.

“But we beat them at Hampden the previous year. Richard Gough scored in the pouring rain. We should have beaten them more often, though.”

Souness believes if Hodgson plays anything less than his best XI, he could live to regret it – but he doesn’t believe anyone in the England camp will be taking Scotland lightly.

He said: “You can guarantee the English players will want to come up here and stuff us.

“That’s something we used to kid ourselves on about, that we were more passionate than them. No, they dislike us as much as we dislike them.

“Roy Hodgson will want to come to Glasgow and turn us over. He’ll know it won’t do him any favours to lose to us. The English media will go after him. That’s not new.

“It’s a hard job managing England, I would imagine. You are always only 45 minutes away from getting dog’s abuse.”

Although Souness believes the current England side lacks star names, he reckons they could still make
