FOOD prices across Britain are FALLING in a massive boost for hard-pressed households.

Exclusive research for the Sunday People found the cost of everyday groceries has dropped by an average 3.5% in the past year.

It means your bill could be far cheaper than official figures out last week suggest. They show food bills falling by 0.19%, .

Fresh chicken has dropped by 10%, cereals by 9% and eggs by 7% while cheese, butter and baked beans are all down by 3%.

Cucumbers are down by 21%, mushrooms by 17%, peppers by 10%, bacon and ham by 6%, pasta by 5%, and white bread by 2%.

Britain’s biggest supermarkets promised billions of pounds of price cuts after losing market share to discounters Aldi and Lidl.

And our study, carred out by price-tracking website mySupermarket, indicates the price war is paying off for millions of shoppers.

But it’s not all good news, with the average cost of bananas and potatoes shooting up by 10%, onions 8% and apples 5%.

MySupermarket, which tracks prices at all major supermarkets, compared the cost of 25 items ranging from apples to white bread between December 2013 and last month.

The total bill went down from £50.23 to £48.44. MySupermarket boss Gilad Simhony said: “This is great news for shoppers. Many popular everyday items have come down significantly in the last 12 months.

“But some items have risen and shoppers should continue to compare prices.”

Experts say the good news for consumers is due to the glut of oil and cereal crops which have pushed down global commodity prices.

Chancellor George Osborne seized on the figures to claim tumbling petrol and food prices are putting more money into people’s pockets before the general election. Item Bananas 6 Potatoes per 2.5kg Onions per 1kg Apples 6 Fruit yoghurt 4x125g 2013 £1.09 £2.88
