Jones goes for hook, line and Sinckler

- By Adam Hathaway

EDDIE JONES wants his side to kick sand in the face of the Aussies and has tipped former bad boy Kyle Sinckler to be his beach bully.

Jones (below) name-checked the 23-year-old prop, who grew up surrounded by south London gang culture, as he finalised his squad for the tour to Australia which he announces today.

Sinckler’s mum Donna, who worked for the police, took him to Battersea Ironsides after her boy kept getting into hot water for violence when he played football.

The England boss was impressed by near-19 stone Sinckler when he came off the bench in Quins’ 26-19 Challenge Cup final defeat to Montpellier 10 days ago and took it to the French.

Jones is expected to name Northampton flanker Teimana Harrison in his tour party – another player he calls ‘combustible’.

He said:“The most interesting one is Sinckler. He has got some areas of his game he needs to improve but he has got some potential competitive edges.

“He is from a pretty tough background so rugby means a lot to him – he plays for all the right reasons. He loves the game and it helped to get him out of a difficult situation so he is a guy who could keep on developing really well.

“When he came on against Montpellier that was what Quins needed. He was prepared to get on the front foot against Montpellier who bullied Quins up front. He was not prepared to be bullied.”

Jones had 26 players not playing in yesterday’s Premiership semi-finals for a three-day training camp in Brighton last week.

And the Aussie is not planning on springing too many surprises in his squads after being unimpressed by what he has watched over the last month. He added: “Probably Sinckler is the only one who has come out of left field.”

Jones will name two groups today – apart from the tour party he will announce a squad for next Sunday’s game against Wales against Twickenham.
