APPEAL TO CELEBS FROM 1996

ENGLAND’S greatest sporting moment was the 1966 World Cup victory over Germany – and those of us who were alive have vivid memories of that afternoon half a century ago.

An astonishin­g 32 million TV viewers watched Geoff Hurst score the last goal in the 4- 2 Wembley triumph – as BBC commentato­r Kenneth Wolstenhol­me yelled: “They think it’s all over... It is now!”

A fascinatin­g archive of letters from 1995 has emerged. In them scores of famous people recall the unbearable tension and then the post match joy on July 30, 1966. Today, as we approach the 50th anniversar­y of Sir Alf Ramsey’s team making history, we take a look at some of them.

The most moving of the letters, intended for a book that was never written, came from England captain BOBBY MOORE’S widow Tina.

She remembers her husband walking on to the pitch and looking for her in the crowd. He wanted to share their “special secret sign” which they did at every game.

After the final whistle, Tina was bursting with pride as she watched Bobby lift the trophy.
