IN my time as a newspaper journalist I’ve been taken for a ride by tight-lipped celebrities more than once. But nothing prepared me for playing passenger to Top Gear’s Tame Racing Driver, the Stig. Settling into the bucket seat of his165mph Ford Focus RS, it became immediately obvious why Britain’s best-loved motorist never utters a word. As soon he revs his engine the roar was so loud it rendered any attempt at chit-chat pointless. The RS goes from 0-62 in just over four seconds but with the Stig it seemed a lot,lot quicker. The next couple of minutes was a total blur. For most of the lap I didn’t see or say anything either. As Stig stared blankly ahead I tried desperately to make out where we were going. Despite constant fears of what would happen if the brakes failed or Stig misjudged a corner, I had a feeling of total security sitting next to a man who is simply brilliant at driving. If you ever need a lightning getaway or a quick taxi driver who doesn’t chat about anything, the Stig’s your man!
