BAKING MAD

Move over Paul and Mary here are crazy versions of GBBO from around the globe

- By Janine Yaqoob

TV doesn’t get more British than Bake Off – but it turns out the whole world has gone crazy about the cookery show.

More than 20 countries have their own versions and equivalents of our judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

It taps into a universal love of cake and biscuits and a good cup of tea.

But the versions broadcast in places such as France, Brazil, Australia, Denmark, Ukraine, India and Turkey can reveal very strange tastes.

For one thing, while the UK’s Bake Off raises eyebrows with gentle innuendos, foreign rivals are much more full-on risqué.

In the German version, Das Grosse Backen – The Biggest Baker – presenters Andrea Schirmaier-Huber, Christian Hümbs and Enie van de Meiklokjes ran a “bachelor party challenge”.

Contestants produced cheeky creations including a bust bursting out of a corset, a rude bottom cake and a couple in bed.

And in another round,nd, bakers had to use a key ingredient which is not usually associated with sweetmeats.

One person made a meat cake and another a desert containing Fisherman’s Friend throat lozenges.

In Brazil they went for a more glamorous presenter than our wholesome Mary.

Bake Off Brazil – Mão Na Massa – Hands- On! – is fronted by exotic brunette Carolina Fiorentino, who is half Mary Mary’s s age. The UK judges take a firm but fair approach. But one presenter from the The Great Bake Off Australia was fired over her comments to contestants.

In one memorable episode, Kerry Vincent shouted: “That is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever put in my mouth.” She was replaced with a more restrained expert called Maggie Beer.

Predictably, love plays a big part in the Italian Bake Off. In typical style, they held “Love Week” in which each baker received a note from a partner or family member requesting a favourite recipe.

The winner was rewarded with a surprise visit on the set from the special person in their life.

Meanwhile, failing to impress judges in the Danish version, Det Store Bagedyst – The Large Baking Contest – b brings a soggy fate.

T The loser at the end of each episode has to jump into a lake fully clothed.
