Bridget Jones’ 50-year diary

Renee can still star into her 80s, says Firth

BRIDGET Jones star Colin Firth believes the heroine should order many more diaries – as the film series could last for 50 years.

Firth, who plays “true love” Mark Darcy in the movies, says Renee Zellweger is so brilliant as Bridget, she can keep fans hooked into her 80s.

“Now that they have revived it, there must be the Old People’s Home version to look forward to,” Firth, 56, said at this week’s London premiere of the third movie, Bridget Jones’s Baby.

Renee, 47, agrees on Bridget’s longevity, saying: “I love this experience and I love this character. I love the idea that the story she tells might resonate with people as she moves on in life.”

She first starred in Bridget Jones’s Diary, in 2001, followed by Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, in 2004.

Author Helen Fielding has also written Mad About the Boy, with Bridget as a 51-year-old widowed mother of two. But no fourth movie has yet been announced. The first two films made more than £400million and the third is set to net another £200million.

The new film, out in Britain this Friday, September 16, sees Bridget fall pregnant.

Firth and Patrick Dempsey are her love interests, either of whom could be the baby’s father.

Renee is back after taking a six-year break from Hollywood to return to university – and said she enjoyed the anonymity.

“When you’re out of people’s consciousness, they stop noticing you,” she said. “It’s fantastic – you order your coffee, you get a coffee and you can leave.”

She is undecided about returning to movies full-time.“I have been enjoying myself a lot, we’ll see what is next,” she said.
