E-cig battery blew up in my trousers

STUNNED James ames Vearncombe shows off hisis horrific burns after an e-cig battery ttery exploded like a firework in his pocket.

James, 49, 9, may need skin grafts and has been scared for life. He had recharged the battery and tried to get it out of his trousers ers when it got hot. He said: : “I was too late. It blew a holele in my jeans and sprayedd flames down my leg like a Romanoman candle.

“I ripped off my jeans and poured water er from the sink over my leg. Thenn I ran into the garden and used the e hosepipe. My skin was hanging g off.”

James, of Rooks Bridge, Somerset, was rushed to hospital in Bristol where his second, third and fourth degree burns were treated for four days.

The businessma­n nessman said:”I’m now in recovery andd have been told it could take 18 months nths to heal. But I’ll always have the scars.”ars.”

Wife Amanda, anda, 45, said: “We want to warn that t these e-cigarettes can be dangerous. us. In hospital the doctors saidd they’ve seen a few people coming ing in with burns.”

Around 2.2 .2 million Brits smoke e-cigs and firefighte­rsirefight­ers attend at least one blaze aze a week caused by the gadgets. .

The Local Government Associatio­n, , which represents 49 fire and rescue cue authoritie­s, said: “We urge users sers to be vigilant and steer clear ear of dodgy, dangerous or incompatib­le chargers which hich can overheat and explode. e. Manufactur­ers of e-cigarettes need to do more to warn of their heir dangers.”
