Buying goods from another EU country
IF you buy goods from a trader based in another EU country and something goes wrong, this is what you can do if the trader won’t oblige.
1 Contact the UK European Consumer Centre (ECC)
The ECC, operated by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, can provide help and information on your rights and how to resolve your issue. They can also speak to the trader on your behalf.
2. EU Online dispute resolution service
This is an online platform where you can lodge your complaint. The easiest way to find it is do a web search for “EU online dispute resolution” and click the link. The platform will contact the trader.
3. European Small Claims Court (ESCC)
If your claim is for less than 2,000 euros you can file a claim in the ESCC. Pop “EU small claims” into a web search and you’ll be given a link straight to the site.
4. Credit Card payments
If the item cost more than £100 but less than £30,000, and you paid all or part with your credit card, make a claim under section 75 of the Consumer Rights Act 1974. Ask your card provider for a claim form. They may refund you then they will take up the fight with the trader.
5. Debit Card payments
You may be able to claim under the chargeback scheme. Contact your bank.
