Voice star’s Olympic race hate ordeal

- By Louise Ford

OLYMPIC long-jumper Jazmin Sawyers delivered a powerhouse performance on The Voice last night – showing an internet troll who racially abused her that she will not be cowed.

The 22-year-old’s rendition of Alessia Cara’s Here wowed the coaches show and she chose will.i.am to be her mentor.

But the performance came after she was subjected to a string of vile insults by a Twitter user last month.

Law graduate Jazmin was asked to explain “how you’re British”, told to go back to Africa – and that Britain belonged “to white Caucasians”.

She publicly shamed the poster – Richie, @ProudEnglishman – and reported him to police.

He wrote: “God I’m sick I’m sick of immigrants like you in this country. Now please explain to me exactly how you’re British?” Speaking of the abuse at the time, she said: “It was completely out of the blue.

“It wasn’t from something I said to him or anything – it really took me aback. I responded by showing people that there are still people in this country who think it’s OK to do this.

“Initially, I was upset that someone in the country I live in and represent could be like this. But since it happened the outpouring of support from people has reversed that.

“When you think about it, you have to laugh really that someone has these opinions still.

“And really, since I exposed him, he has deleted his account, so what was the point?”

Jazmin, from Staffordshire, is juggling her training for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with rehearsals for The Voice.

The Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, who finished 8th at the Rio Olympics last year, has said Team GB athletics chiefs back her decision to go on the ITV talent show.
