MILLIONS of people use PayPal as a fast way to buy things securely online but there is still plenty of confusion surrounding it.
Does PayPal give refunds if something goes wrong and the trader won’t help?
PayPal has a buyer protection scheme – but it does not always apply and you must take certain steps before you can use it. So here’s what you need to know. 1. COMPLAIN TO THE TRADER First raise a dispute with the seller. This must be done within 180 days of the PayPal payment. 2. GO TO PAYPAL If you cannot get a satisfactory resolution to your complaint within 20 days of raising it with the trader, you can escalate to PayPal under the Buyer Protection Scheme. 3. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CASE For the Buyer Protection Scheme to apply, you must have an eligible purchase. Most are, but there are some exceptions.
These include cars and other vehicles, flights, custom- made items and eBay classified ads.
And you must have sent payment from your Paypal account to the recipient’s Paypal account through the send money tab applicable to payments for goods and/or services on the Paypal website or app. 4. COMMON PROBLEMS Issues include if you did not receive your purchase or it is “significantly not as described”. That means if it is materially different from the last description of it you received from the payment recipient before you paid for it.
Paypal lists some examples. These include:
You received a completely different item.
For instance, you bought a book and then received a DVD or an empty box, or the software that was posted to you was not the software sold to you.
The condition of your purchase had been misrepresented. This might mean the listing for an item said “new” but when it arrived, it was clearly used.
The item you bought was advertised as authentic but is not.
It is missing major parts or features and the fact that these are missing was not disclosed in the listing.
You bought three items from a payment recipient but received only two.
Your purchase was damaged during postage.
