ARNIE QUITS SHOW AFTER TRUMP JIBE

- By by Karen Rockett

ARNOLD Schwarzenegger has terminated his ties with American TV’s The New Celebrity Apprentice after being mocked by the programme’s former host Donald Trump.

Mr Trump scoffed at the reality show’s low ratings at a National Prayer Breakfast, asking the audience to “pray for Arnold”.

Mr Schwarzenegger hit back: “Hey Donald, I have a great idea. Why don’t we switch jobs?

“You take over TV because you’re such an expert on ratings and I take over your job and people can finally sleep comfortably again.” Republican former California governor Mr Schwarzenegger, 69, said he would not be back on the show because of its “baggage”.

He began presenting it in 2014 after it had been hosted by Mr Trump, 70, for six years. In January it had just 4.9 million viewers.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump is set to appoint Fiona Hill, a miner’s daughter from County Durham, to be his top adviser on Russia.

Ms Hill, 51, who gained a PhD in history at America’s Harvard university and has a northeast accent, is a fierce critic of Russian leader Vladimir Putin and has written a book highlighting his links to the KGB. Her appointment will be seen as a sign Mr Trump is distancing himself from his links with Russia.

Also, it was revealed that Mr Trump is considering separating parents and children crossing together illegally into the US.

Parents would be kept in custody while they contest deportation. Children would be held briefly till they can be taken in care.

Mr Trumph said he wants to end “catch and release”, whereby illegal migrant families are freed while awaiting legal proceedings.
