THUG PAIR GET 10YRS

- By John Kelly

A VIKING penny dug up near Newark, Notts, by metal detectorist Richard Scothern, 45, is expected to sell for £15,000 at auction. A BARBER shop in Kazakhstan is attracting customers by offering haircuts from women wearing nothing but tiny aprons and heels. TWO savage thugs fuelled by drink or drugs beat a man unconscious, pouring vodka in his eyes and leaving his ear hanging off.

Jordan Hopkins, 23, had let in Damian Sweet and Liam Snaith into his home thinking they were his friends but they soon turned violent. The pair, carrying a bottle of strong cider, bound him and launched a vicious attack.

Mr Hopkins was slashed with a craft knife, kicked, punched, taunted, humiliated, headbutted and had booze poured in his eyes.

He drifted in and out of consciousness and was left with cuts and bruises, a bite on his arm and a broken collarbone.

He was taken to hospital last August and treated with staples, stitches and glue, including to his ear which was “hanging off”.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Sweet, 19, and Snaith, 23, both of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, were each jailed for 10 years after admitting false imprisonment and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Judge Penny Moreland said: “This was a sustained assault by the two of you on him and you used a weapon to cause him injury.”

She said they were under the influence of drink or drugs and the attack “included gratuitous degradation by squirting and drenching him with drink.”
