Rob saves know-how for Leeds
GARRY MONK believes Rob Green’s mental scars are driving Leeds United’s promotion push.
The Whites boss saw the veteran turn in a crucial performance during the 3-1 victory at Birmingham City which helped turn the tide in his side’s favour.
Although striker Chris Wood hogged the headlines with a two-goal salvo – taking his tally for the season to 25 – former England international Green played his part with two superb stops at vital stages on Friday night.
Green, now 37, was dropped from the England squad after a howler against the USA in the 2010 World Cup.
And although he has been promoted from the Championship with each of his previous three clubs – Norwich City, West Ham United and QPR – he endured a roller-coaster ride at Loftus Road for the past four seasons.
Monk believes it is that bank of knowledge that is making a difference.
He said: “A lot of these boys are playing in their first season in the Championship. Whatever the moments – be they up or down – it’s invaluable to have someone who understands what’s going on.
“The knocks he’s taken fit perfectly into the mentality of this young group. I brought him in because he’s a top professional who has a desire to perform.
“You can be focused on drowning out any negatives. But it’s part of your life as a footballer. It’s never easy. There’s ups and a lot of downs.
“For me, the key is that he’s a good player. The bottom line is: ‘Can he perform and do what’s needed?’
“Rob has shown that he is capable – even at his ripe old age that he is capable of contributing to the team.”
