In some areas there has been a shocking 20 per cent increase, taking the numbers to an eight-year peak.

Campaigners have accused the Tories of failing to keep a pledge made by PM David Cameron in 2015 to stamp out knife crime.

Danny O’Brien of Anti-Knife UK said: “These figures will shock anyone who doesn’t regularly follow knife crime.

“It has got so bad that many teens see it as being as normal as somebody getting knocked down.

“Knife crime has been allowed to spiral by Governments only giving the problem lip service, Campaigners are being ignored and the CPS and judges need to get tougher on carriers.”

Mr Cameron introduced legislation setting out minimum six- month sentences for anyone convicted of possession of a blade for a second time. It was meant as a deterrent.

But new figures reveal last year there were 18,492 cautions or convictions for having a knife – a rise of 10.5 per cent in the last 12 months alone.

Children aged 10 to 17 accounted for 3,786 of these offences while one in every five offenders is recorded as being a juvenile, the highest proportion since 2009.

The 2016 statistics from the Ministry of Justice show that in 19 of the 43 police areas the numbers caught with knives increased by more than 10 per cent year on year. In London, there was an a rise of 21 per cent as the numbers soared from 3,670 in 2015 to last year’s tally of 4,441.

Meanwhile forces i n Northumbria, S o u t h Wa l e s , Hampshire and Hertfordshire also saw a sharp rise.

Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said: “Knife crime ruins lives and devastates communities and those who carry blades should feel the full force of the law.” 2016 offences 168 451 244 445 555 317 141 608 159 225 4,441 % Rise 40.0 31.9 31.2 25.0 24.4 24.3 23.7 23.6 22.3 21.6 21.0
