EMIRATES FA CUP SEMI-FINAL A DOUBLE W Supersub Hazard puts Chelsea in the frame for trophy-fest Steve Bates

-

EDEN HAZARD bounced from the bench to deliver Chelsea an FA Cup Final with a Wembley wonder show.

The brilliant Belgian was left out of the starting line-up by Antonio Conte but appeared on the hour to torment Spurs and hand Mauricio Pochettino’s stars more Wembley misery – and put Chelsea on track for a league and cup Double.

Tottenham had won only one of their last eight Wembley games, but they had the final in their sights after twice coming from behind against their London rivals.

With the game all square at 2-2 there looked only one potential winner – until Hazard arrived.

And in a six-minute spell that left Spurs on their knees, Hazard scored a stunning goal to put Antonio Conte’s side ahead after 75 minutes, then set up Nemanja Matic for a thunderbolt strike that had Chelsea fans in raptures.

Gamble

And if this was a glimpse of the drama that’s ready to explode between Spurs and Chelsea in the title race then bring it on.

Given the way Chelsea’s commanding 13-point Premier League lead has been worryingly reduced to just four points, Conte took a bold gamble with his team selection that ended up inflicting a double whammy.

Leaving your two best players – Hazard and Diego Costa – on the bench seemed a risky way of restoring some moraleorale to a Blues side in need of a lift after two defeats in four games. s.

But Conte (inset) is not one to shirk a big decision after turning Chelsea’s season around with a switch to a t hree- man defensive formation which transformedd their season after a rocky start. rt.

If Pochettino needed any motivational material for his s prematch speech then Chelsea’s surprise line-up with Michy Batshuayi in ahead of Costa and Willian deputising for Hazard was the perfect script.

But it was Chelsea who struck first and managed to end a pulsating first half in front. The Blues might have been rocked by their defeat at United but there appeared no hangover as theyth started full ofo confidence. And it took just fou four minutes to take t he l ead after Totten Tottenham defender T Tobyb Ald Alderweireld fouled Pedro on the edge of the box. The Spurs star was booked but Willian delivered the real punishment, superbly bending his free kick into the corner with Hugo Lloris appearing to be deceived by the direction. With Nathan Ake replacing ill Gary Cahill alongside David Luiz in a three-man defence maybe Tottenham fancied their chances.

And with their first real attack they levelled on 17 minutes after Harry Kane won a corner after a quick Spurs free-kick.

Christian Eriksen’s corner was headed out by Luiz but it found its way back to the Dane who sent in a low cross which Kane converted with a stooping header across Thibaut Courtois for his 26th goal of the season. Spurs then grabbed control.

Eric Dier was unlucky not to send Pochettino’s stars ahead with a glancing 35th- minute header from Jan Vertonghen’s cross while Eriksen had a shot saved by Courtois.

Somehow, though, Chelsea ended the half on top as Heung-Min Son went to ground in his own box tackling Victor Moses as he ran on to N’Golo Kante’s pass.

Referee Martin Atkinson took a long look then angered Spurs by awarding a penalty before Willian stepped forward and sent Lloris the wrong way to reclaim the lead for Chelsea.

Lloris was lucky to escape more punishment moments later after hand- balling outside his box. Dele Alli drew Spurs level for a second time with a sublime left-foot finish from Eriksen’s 52nd-minute cross – and Tottenham looked in the driving seat.

Sublime

They hadn’t bargained on Conte’s masterful double substitution though, as the Italian sent on first Hazard then Cesc Fabregas.

And the duo destroyed Spurs as first Hazard drilled a low left-footer into the corner after Kyle Walker only half cleared a Fabregas corner, then Hazard
