Big beasts slug it out for hearts and votes

- By Nigel Nelson POLITICAL EDITOR

THERE is less than 48 hours left to register to vote in the general election.

More than two million people have signed up since Theresa May called the snap poll last month.

But there are still seven million people who are eligible to vote who are not on the roll, the Electoral Commission estimates.

New registrations from young voters have been the highest of any age group.

Time is running out to have your say – lists close at 11.59pm tomorrow.

THE nation’s two reigning political heavyweights square up for the fight of a generation.

In the blue corner Theresa May is defending her title of Westminster champ, while in the red challenger Jeremy Corbyn is determined to defy the bookies and wrest it from her. Seconds away... ROUND ONE: Slugger May calls a surprise general election. Thumper Corbyn reels from her first punch, hits the canvas, and picks himself up. Referee John Bercow demands a clean fight. ROUND TWO: Slugger May dodges a left to the chin as Thumper promises four extra bank holidays. Fans are unimpressed. She counters with a strong and stable right hook of an energy price cap. ROUND THREE: Ref Bercow warns Slugger not to steal Labour’s clothes. Thumper Corbyn comes out fighting and runs rings round May by promising the abolition of zero hours contracts, curbs on migrant workers and a new charter of worker rights. ROUND FOUR: Ignoring the ref’s warning Slugger throws a big punch with a pledge to build more affordable homes. A cut opens above Thumper’s eye and a draft of his manifesto leaks out. Bercow considers halting the match. Thumper insists he’s fit to go on. ROUND FIVE: Thumper is out of the red corner almost before the bell sounds. He’s finding new reserves of energy. It’s a right to Slugger’s body as he scraps tuition fees, a left to the head hitting £123,000 earners with 50p income tax, a feint with more free childcare, another left hook with

railil nationalisation,ti li ti and d some niftyift footwork guaranteeing a triple lock on pensions. As the bell goes Thumper skips to his red corner and explains how to count 10,000 police officers to Diane Abbott as she sponges him down. ROUND SIX: Thumper May is tiring now. She’s beginning to hit wide with a pledge to cut immigration to the tens of thousands, misses with more grammar schools, and trips over Brexit. Can Thumper seize his chance? ROUNDSEVENROUNDSEVEN: Sl Slugger M May i is on the ropes as her double whammy of taking the £200 winter fuel allowance and homes away from pensioners fails to connect. She’s taking a lot of punishment from elderly fans. Thumper is still on his feet. LAST ROUND: Slugger and Thumper jab at each other, but with no knockout punch this contest is going to be decided on points as fight fans go to the polls on June 8.
