JOE RESCUES WIGAN

-

Holbrook only landed in England on Thursday and took charge of one training session ahead of the game.

Seven days earlier, Saints had crashed out of the Challenge Cup after a woeful performance in their 53- 10 humiliation at Castleford.

But Holbrook’s presence had an immediate impact in a remarkable display, with prop Alex Walmsley leading the way with two tries.

Holbrook said with a smile: “I came in at a good time.

“The boys were hurting a lot after getting bundled out of the Challenge Cup – it was good timing on my behalf, but it’s all credit to them for the performance.

“I could just tell that they were doing it tough.

“I’d been watching their games from the other side of the world in Australia, and I could feel the frustration of the players and staff.

“I just wanted to simplify things for them and let them go

But Holbrook, who has worked with Barba briefly at Canterbury Bulldogs, admitted Saints are keen.

Holbrook said: “If it was to work out it would be exciting for the game to get him back JOE BURGESS leapt to score a stunning late try and earn Wigan a share of the spoils in a thrilling final game of Magic Weekend day one.

Jack Hughes’ effort against his former club moments earlier looked to have sealed a comeback win for Warrington.

But they had reckoned without Burgess, who outjumped the Wolves defence to clinch a point for Shaun Wane’s men.

George Williams missed the kick to seal the points, but defeat would have been harsh on either team.

Wigan winger Liam Marshall had earlier bagged a hat-trick as he took his tally against Warrington to seven tries in two matches this season. Wigan had been 12-6 in front at the break despite ending the first half with 12 men after Lewis Tierney was sin-binned for a professional foul.

Marshall opened the scoring by finishing Sean O’Loughlin’s long pass, and although Daryl Clark responded, the winger bagged his second by sprinting 90 metres after intercepting Kevin Brown’s pass.

Marshall completed his hat-trick by following up his own kick in the 46th minute, before the Wolves roared back.

Stefan Ratchford collected Brown’s kick and rounded Tierney to score, before his pass gave Tom Lineham just enough room to squeeze over in the corner and reduce the gap to two points.

Ratchford and George Williams exchanged penalties before the late drama unfolded.
