Murray is a genius’ in defence

- By Neil McLeman

ANDY MURRAY will start his grasscourt training at Queen’s Club tomorrow with Mats Wilander warning rivals for his Wimbledon crown: He’s a real danger.

The Scot’s claycourt season ended in the semi-final of the French Open with a five-set defeat by Stan Wawrinka. Top seed Murray admitted he paid the price for lack of top-quality match practice during a torrid two months before Paris.

After spending the weekend back home in Surrey, the world No.1 and his head coach Ivan Lendl will hit the courts in west London to be ready for the Aegon Championships next week – before Wimbledon on July 3.

Seven-time Grand Slam winner Wilander said Murray’s game was still a work in progress, but claimed he will be ready for the All England Club.

The Swedish legend said: “Andy is still not sufficiently confident to dare to hit his backhand or his forehand like in 2016. Nevertheless, he did everything tactically to push Wawrinka to five sets.

“In defence, he is a genius. And he is turning his season around. Beware of him at Wimbledon.”

Wawrinka, the 2015 French champion, faces Rafa Nadal today in the men’s final with the Spaniard seeking to extend his record to 10 titles at Roland Garros.

The winner will move up to No.2 in the world rankings and Wawrinka said: “To play Rafa on clay in the final is probably the biggest challenge you can have in tennis. He’s the best player ever on clay.”
