Corrie Aidan suicide plot is life saver
CORONATION Street has come a long way since the days of Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner.
Once known for its gentle storylines and sense of humour, Corrie has changed tack dramatically over the years.
And it has come in for criticism along the way.
Many feel its spectacular tragedies and other hard-hitting stories are too much.
But the show has always been staunchly proud of tackling issues. From Hayley Cropper’s assisted dying to the child grooming of Bethany Platt, domestic violence and numerous murders, the show has never shied away from tough topics.
The latest story line is one even Corrie’s fiercest critics must agree is important. The death of Aidan Connor is highlighting the worrying issue of male suicide.
The latest stats from the Samaritans show that nearly 6,000 people a year take their lives, and three quarters of those are men. That’s three times more people than die in road accidents.
Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 40, for many complex reasons.
The Samaritans say soaps – particularly Aidan’s story – are vital for raising awareness.
This is because, as is often the case in real life, there are very few warning signs.
Corrie bosses hope to encourage people who are struggling to open up and talk about their problems, as well as encouraging friends and family to be vigilant.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie or soaps, this issue has been handled sensitively and brings home an important point.
It is no exaggeration to suggest that it could save lives.
