LIVES SAVER Car death Amelia, 11 in organs gift to four

- By Dan Warburton

A SCHOOLGIRL killed by a runaway car wheel has left a legacy of love by donating her organs to save the lives of FOUR people. Amelia Wood, who had beaten leukaemia, died when a wheel flew off a passing Land Rover and hit her. Now the 11-year-old’s mother has revealed she was inspired by Amelia’s earlier cancer battle to donate her organs. The selfless act has saved the lives of three young boys and woman in her 20s. Still raw just eight weeks after her daughter’s death, Hayley Hodson, 38, said: “Amelia died the day after the accident. “A doctor very tactfully asked if we would donate and I immediately said, ‘Yes’. “Amelia had leukaemia and we lived and breathed that for so long. The question of organ donation was never a question for me. “We spent years with children who needed bone marrow transplants. Amelia only needed chemotherapy so it was an immediate yes from me.” Amelia, a year seven pupil at Louth Academy, Lincs, was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after being hit as she walked to school.

Fantastic

She had been diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009 and had her last treatment in 2012. The family are still devastated by the loss of their “happy, funny, lively, beautiful” girl. But Hayley said: “About two weeks ago we received a letter saying they had saved the lives of three young boys and woman in her 20s. “It’s an amazing feeling but we are still getting our heads around the fact that she is not here.” Amelia had two younger brothers, Oscar, eight, and Dexter, three. Hayley added: “Oscar asks where her sister is and we’ve explained to Dexter that she’s gone to Heaven. It’s very sad.” An internet Justgiving page set up to help Amelia’s family and also the air ambulance has reached £1,500. Amelia’s inspiring story comes after the Daily Mirror’s campaign for an opt-out law for organ donation, which MPS have backed.
