Mcclean moan provides food for thought...

-

PREMIER LEAGUE footballers really need a new stock phrase to replace the one which starts with the words: “We need to look after our families...”

It was trotted out as justification by West Brom’s James Mcclean last weekend after he was asked about the prospects of the Baggies playing in the Championship. He refused to rule out an immediate move away to a top-flight club – assuming he is wanted, of course.

Last November’s Global Sports Salaries Survey revealed that the average salary of a footballer in the Premier League now tops £50,000a-week. Apart from two seasons, when he was in the Championship with Wigan Athletic, that is where Mcclean (left) has played since he was signed by Sunderland in 2011.

By my estimation, the Republic of Ireland international has pocketed over £10million in that time.

That’s more than enough to put food onto the table of the Mcclean household for ever. Good luck to him. But please, any other players out there using this, “Look after our families” line, don’t bother.

There’s a world of difference being told, for example, that Carillion has collapsed and that you’re not going to be paid your £500 this week and the fate suffered by a relegated Premier League player.

It’s an insult to every supporter out there paying his wages for a start.

Please find another way of making your point, fellas.
