Crack down on gambling for children

-

TODAY we reveal the shocking state of gambling among British youngsters.

A quarter of a million 11 to 16-year-olds are identified as problem gamblers. That’s a shocking statistic. And it’s one that should spur the Government into action.

It is quite easy to see where the risks lie.

Turn on any sporting event and gambling is everywhere.

The logos of firms are plastered over football shirts.

Betting firms sponsor major competitions, meaning their branding is everywhere.

And on some channels almost every advert that apears during breaks in play encourgaes people to put a bet on. The relentless nature of the advertising is surely a factor in the growing problem.

Earlier this week, MPS called on the Culture Secretary to toughen things up.

They want Matt Hancock to treat gambling firms the same as tobacco companies with tougher regulations being brought in.

There are signs the Government is recognising the creeping harmful nature of gambling.

Just last month, they took the decision to reduce the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals.

This newspaper led the campaign and were pleased when the Government saw sense.

Now Mr Hancock must take action again – this time to protect our youngsters.

One lad, whose story we bring you today, boasted it “couldn’t have been easier” for him to place a bet. That needs to stop.

Working alongside gambling firms the Government must act to make it impossible – or at least tougher – for youngsters to bet.

Without urgent action this problem is set to grow, putting even more children at risk.
