difficult year for the drugs programmes mainly due to regime changes plus a move which did not go smoothly. “The substance abuse courses were not working due to specific circum- stances on the wing; mainly due to the fact that drug-fuelled drones were arriving regularly at unprotected cell windows.”

It said courses were hampered as well by “the pervasive smell of cannabis permeating throughout.” The revelation comes a week after the Sunday People told how nurses are to be given new protection against the affects of breathing in Spice fumes while they treat cons.

Action is finally being taken after we exposed how staff were becoming ill. Officials from the Royal College of Nursing are to meet the Prison Service to hammer out new rules.

A normal heartbeat is 60 to 90 beats a minute. But healthcare staff have seen inmates who have just smoked Spice with heartbeats of 140 to 180, putting them at risk of death.

Nets fitted to counter Spicecarrying drones have not been enough to end smuggling.

At HMP Northumberland, cons were caught hiding drugs in Kinder eggs, which are small enough to slip through holes.

A spokesman for HM Prison Service said: “The netting has been replaced.

“We work with police to keep the prison walls under watch and we’ll prosecute anyone trying to smuggle in drugs.”
