ARRANGED MARRIAGES ARE OFF MENU

- By Janine Yaqoob TV EDITOR

TV’S Mr Fix It Nick Knowles says he’s mended his relationship with ex-wife Jessica Rose-moor. MUSLIM Bake Off star Nadiya Hussain has said she will not make her children have an arranged marriage like she did.

But she says despite her misgivings at the start of her relationship with husband Abdal, she knew after two years he was “The One”.

Nadiya, 33, said: “The second day I saw him was the day we married. We did everything backwards. When I moved in he didn’t even make wardrobe space for me. He said I didn’t need as many clothes and would throw some out. I thought, ‘This is not OK. Why am I even married to this guy?’.”

They were brought closer when their second son was in and out of hospital with asthma.

She said: “We had one child in hospital and another at home, we were shuttling between the two. I remember thinking of my husband, ‘There is no other person in the world I would rather have around at this moment than him’.

“He propped me up. I remember thinking, ‘This is it – this is what marriage and love and commitment are about’.” However, the cookery writer and TV star insisted she will not force Musa, 11, Dawud, 11, and Maryam, seven, into arranged marriages – but she admitted she is strict with them at home.

She said the children help around the house, do chore charts and even clean the toilet.

She added: “They do everything. My mantra is, ‘This isn’t my house, it is our house’.”

Nadiya’s Family Favourites begins on Monday, July 16 at 8pm on BBC2.
