SWEET IDEAS FOR TUMS

- By Vikki White

ENGLAND’S top goalies are urging men to give blood and save lives.

The NHS needs 25,000 male donors because their blood is particularly useful to make plasma and platelets which can stop bleeding after surgery.

Men are able to donate more often because they tend to have lots of iron. But currently two in three new donors are women.

Footballing legends Peter Shilton, who won 125 caps for England, and David Seaman, 75 caps, have stepped forward to encourage blokes to give a pint.

Peter, whose wife worked for the NHS for more than 20 years, said: “It doesn’t need the hand of god to save lives – everyone can do it.

“A blood donation can save or improve up to three lives and it shouldn’t take more than an hour of your time.”

The most needed blood types are O negative and B negative, with supplies dropping at certain times of year, including bank holidays, summer and Christmas. And there is a shortage of donors with the rare subtype Ro, which is used to treat the UK’S 15,000 sufferers of sickle cell disease.

This blood type is more common among black people.

David, 54, said: “We want everyone to know that they can save the people around them.

“It can’t be overemphasised how important each donation is.

“So please support your country in a way that can make you the heroes off the pitch.”
