This Is me in bits for another series

-

AMERICAN hit drama This Is Us on Wednesday was so sicklysweet that I could almost feel the enamel on my teeth rotting away. Twins Kate and Kevin, played by Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley, have an adopted brother Randall – Sterling K Brown.

Randall, dumped at a fire station, was taken to the hospital just as mum Rebecca, Mandy Moore, had lost the third triplet.

Kate struggles with her weight and confidence and Kevin is making his way as an actor having quit his big sitcom role The Manny.

Randall is a high-achieving broker with a perfect wife – was Susan Kelechi Watson put on Earth to make us feel bad? – perfect kids, perfect house and, er, dad issues.

Masochistic

series. “Things not said, advice not given, envelopes unstamped, regrets enveloping me,” came his dulcet tones. Millions reached for the tissues.

Later, aspiring singer Kate braved the terror of an audition room and a queue of skinny girls. Kevin seemed adrift with his girlfriend far away, while Randall became obsessed with adopting a baby boy, with wife Beth not on board.

Back in the 1990s, Jack and Rebecca told the kids they were “taking a moment to catch our breath”, while we all shouted ‘Noooooo!’ at the telly.

Then Jack made a big confession, telling Rebecca: “I’ve been drunk for weeks,” and the devastating final scene revealed that Jack had died and there had been a fire.

“This series will break me,” tweeted one fan afterwards.

This may not be everyone’s cup of tea if you’re not a fan of long dialogue, soapboxing and levered-in scenes to make us sob, but with a sizzling cast and gripping plot, I really enjoyed it. Even though I sure as hell didn’t look like I did.

I’VE always been fascinated mockumentary that was laughable, by Keith Lemon, and not in a but didn’t make me laugh.
