England win sets up Leeds decider

ENGLAND ARE ‘ROOTHLESS’ NOW

-

Along with a restrained half-century from skipper Morgan – and a vital late maiden international 50 from David Willey – the total enabled the bowlers to apply the brakes to India’s freescoring batsmen.

But they were only able to do so because Root defiantly refused to budge, a 12th hundred in this format drawing him level with Marcus Trescothick.

When he was eventually run out off the last ball of the innings, his 113 had enabled England to post their fourth highest ODI score at cricket’s HQ. And JOE ROOT saluted England’s ruthlessness – and predicted there is more to come.

The centurion said that Eoin Morgan’s side were never going to let go of the game after they had been “smart” with the bat.

Root (right): “I was desperate to contribute to us winning games of cricket and today was an opportunity to do that – and thankfully I managed to pull through.

“As a group we were smart in making a good total. We didn’t go too hard too early. And the way Eoin played, followed up by David Willey, was perfect really.

“Then David bowled and put pressure straight back on India. It was a fabulous effort and made it difficult for them.

“That ruthless side of this team really came out and you will see that more and more with this group. Hopefully we can back that up and finish the season strongly.”
