Hail the DUB STAR

Croatian striker is a top TV celebrity

- By David Morgan

IF a sex bomb like Lord Byron calls you a pearl – the chances are you’ll never be short of admirers. variety posip produces belters packed with flavour. Think of posip as payback time for every insipid glass of white wine you’ve ever had.

I was privileged to sample it on a short boat trip to the idyllic Bowa restaurant on the island of Sipan.

In Dubrovnik old town they sell guided tours for Game of Thrones fans. At peak times the steps to the Jesuit church down which Got’s Queen Cersei took her naked walk of shame are a forest of selfie sticks.

I followed a weather-beaten wooden sign saying “Cold Drinks” and stepped through a stone doorway to a buza bar.

This is a hole-in-the-wall haven where you have a drink on the rocks outside the city’s fortifications.

Untroubled by tourists, there are lots of cats hanging out in Dubrovnik. And I don’t mean Kenneth Clarke nursing a Blue Note album. It must be all the excellent fish restaurants.

With his “pearl of the Adriatic” tag, Byron set the bar high. But George Bernard Shaw attempted to top it by calling Dubrovnik “paradise on earth”. There may be more visitors than is good for it, but if the cats are cool with that then so am I. FACTFILE: Flights to Dubrovnik with Jet2 from Stansted from £136 return, depending on times.
