Family survives after Tube runs over them

Mum fell on track with baby in buggy

- By Stephen Hayward by John Kelly

A MUM, dad and their baby tumbled into the path of a Tube train – and survived.

Police say the mother was pushing the youngster in a buggy when she accidentally slipped over the platform edge while looking at an information board.

The child’s father leapt down to help and the three sheltered in a pit beneath the track as a train passed over.

They avoided being electrocuted by high-voltage lines “by pure luck”, said Transport for London.

London’s Baker Street station was evacuated and southbound Jubilee Line trains were suspended after the drama on Friday at about 10.15pm. TFL spokesman Nigel Holness said: “We are relieved the family were able to escape unharmed and we offer them our best wishes.

“Having reviewed footage from our platform cameras and spoken to those involved we understand this incident was an accident but it does underline the need for all customers to remain behind the yellow line when waiting for trains or walking along the platform.”

Witness Peter Holland said people were running around screaming and crying after the incident. He wrote on Twitter: “I can’t TERRIFIED shoppers fled a woman brandishing a foot-long machete screaming: “Kill, kill, kill!” yesterday.

Market trader Abdul Razzaq was hailed a hero for facing down the 6ft woman and persuading her to drop the knife. She was then arrested.

The woman, aged in her 30s, unwrapped the new knife in Barnsley town centre, South Yorkshire, yesterday morning.

It is believed she may have been suffering from mental health issues.

One man was stabbed in the shoulder and it is believed she threatened to stab several others.

Mr Razzaq, 43, said: “People were really scared. She was saying ‘kill, kill, kill’. Everybody ran. I followed this lady saying, ‘Don’t touch anybody’. I said, ‘Kill me but don’t touch my people. Keep that attack for me’.

Cornered

I said, ‘Why do you attack the people?’ Then she just said, ‘Kill people, kill people’.” She was later cornered at the railway station, with Mr Razzaq persuading her to put down the kitchen knife. She was then arrested. Flower stall owner Craig Ward, 42, said of the 8.30am drama: “She was walking past and threw her bag down, then pulled the knife out and started chasing a bloke up Market Hill – she was screaming. “Then she came back down the hill for her bag. I heard she started going after a window cleaner after that. “She was a massive woman, 6ft tall. “It was very frightening to see a woman running around with a knife stabbing random people.” South Yorkshire police confirmed the arrest of the woman and stated she is “currently being assessed from a mental health perspective.” tell you how relieved I am to hear this wasn’t fatal. Thoughts out to the driver of the train. Unbelievable.”

Another witness said: “I saw a man leave the station with a child, then a woman came out and she was wearing white trainers which had black skid marks on, and then someone brought a buggy out of the station but it didn’t look damaged.”

The family’s survival was made possible by a drainage gully below the track, sometimes called an anti-suicide pit. Transport police are investigating.
