Mr Big’s graveside memorial smashed HAMMER ATTACK ON GANGSTER SHRINE

- By Phil Cardy by Amy Sharpe

A MEMORIAL at the grave of gangster Paul “Mr Big” Massey has been smashed up.

Hammers were used to destroy a marble bench which included two commemorative plaques.

Police are investigating the attack at Agecroft cemetery in Salford, Manchester.

Massey, 55, a notorious underworld figure, was shot five times with a submachinegun outside his home in Salford three years ago.

He was branded Salford’s “Mr Big” during a council meeting in 1992 and was jailed for 14 years for stabbing a man in the groin in 1999. He stood as a candidate for mayor of Salford in 2012.

Louise Lydiate, mum of the gangster’s kids, said the graveside attack was too upsetting to talk about in detail but described it as disgusting.

One of the plaques read: “In loving memory of Paul Massey, a loving father, grandad, WAYNE Rooney pushes his son’s pram as the family settle into their new life in the US.

England’s record goalscorer and his wife Coleen went shopping in Washington DC after taking their two oldest kids – Kai, eight, and fiveyear-old Klay – to school.

Wayne and Coleen, both 32, went largely unnoticed during the outing.

The couple would be mobbed by fans if they were spotted in a shopping centre back at home in North West England.

In Washington, Wayne joked around with his children using a paper crown but he seemed less brother, uncle, friend, 1960 - 2015, love always.” The grave itself was not damaged. Massey’s funeral was attended by hundreds of people but after the service one of the mourners was attacked at the graveside. His brother-in-law Stephen Lydiate was beaten with a heavy wooden beam used to lower the coffin into enthusiastic while hitting the shops with Coleen. As she checked out a psychic store, a bored looking Wayne had a rest on the pavement and later he could not stifle a yawn as the couple sat on a wall. They were joined by Coleen’s parents Tony and Colette. Last year Wayne and Coleen – whose other children are sixmonth-old Cass and two-year-old Kit – were rocked by his drink-driving arrest. He was then banned for two years. The former Everton and Manchester United striker has been in top form since making his debut for Major League Soccer side DC United in July. the grave and had a chemical poured in his face. Two men have been charged with murdering Massey and his close pal John Kinsella, 53, who was shot dead as he walked his dog five months ago.

Kinsella, an alleged gangland enforcer on Merseyside, was a pallbearer at Massey’s funeral.

Greater Manchester Police said yesterday: “Police were called at 3.20pm on Thursday to reports of damage caused to a bench at Agecroft Crematorium.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
