She is following in the celebrated footsteps of screen legends Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand playing a young woman whose fame rises as her older lover’s fades.

The film is not out until October 5 but critics are already tipping Gaga to become the first actress to win an Oscar for the role.

They are impressed by the chemistry between her struggling singersongwriter Ally and troubled country musician Jackson, played by Bradley Cooper, who is also the director.

The duo even wrote many of the songs together, performing all of them live and recording scenes on stage at Coachella and Glastonbury festivals.

Gaga, 32, who will be credited by her real name Stefani Germanotta, said: “I’ve always loved to shape-shift and become different characters. It’s part of my artwork and music.

“It’s a beautiful story and one that people will be touched by all over the world. It’s a story about love, about what Bradley would refer to as the human plight and addiction.”

This version of the rags-to-riches melodrama draws on elements of Gaga’s own rise from New York schoolgirl to award winner, via cocaine addiction, break-ups and illness.

She said: “I’d talk with the writers about my life, how the music industry sort of tries to bridle you once you get grabbed up by a big-time manager. But there are also some major differences between me and Ally. When I started I was 19, I was fierce and like a fighter going into the ring. Ally just gave up on herself.

“I was not the most beautiful girl in the room. There were lots of women that were singers but did not write their own music like I do.

“No matter what they asked me to do, I always had to make sure it was done my way.”

Gaga has hard acts to follow playing the rising star because each version of A Star Is Born has breathed new life into the timeless tale.

The 1937 original starred pre-war golden girl Janet Gaynor, the first ever best actress Oscar winner, and Frederic March, who won best actor for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Audiences were gripped by the tale of a farm girl and aspiring actress who shoots to fame after meeting and falling in love with a fading actor. He spirals into alcoholism as her star ascends.

When he overhears her planning to quit showbusiness to care for him, he drowns himself and she carries on in tribute to her lost love.

The story was rumoured to have been inspired by the rocky marriage of actors Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay.

It also had some similarities to the 1932 film What Price Hollywood? which almost led to a plagiarism lawsuit.

The plot was given a musical makeover in 195 and Judy Garla tress’s big come bust-up with Me
