PORTILLO SO DRAB BUT LUMLEY STILL FAB

-

That one wordless scene last night gave us everything. It was ruthless, chilling, funny, tense and oddly beautiful. Jodie, recognisable as the mistress in Doctor Foster, plays extraordinary assassin Villanelle. She’d just carried out her latest “kill” but was taking the time to, rather seductively, enjoy a scoop of ice cream before leaving Vienna. And why the hell not? Meanwhile in London, Grey’s Anatomy star Sandra Oh, as MI5 security officer Eve, woke up screaming, sending her husband into a panic. “I fell asleep on both my arms,” she announced. Funny from the off, this is a rare beast. A drama that can pull off both comedy and thriller. It has all the international glamour of a Bond movie, while also making us laugh with hyper-normal scenes, I USUALLY find celebrity travel hosts insufferable. Whether it’s Caroline Quentin on a a camel or Michael Portillo on a train, we can’t learn about a place without a famous face cashing in on their allexpenses-paid trip. Joanna Lumley, right, is my ONLY exception. Her Silk Road Adventure on ITV on Wednesday is her “most exotic journey yet”. She began the ancient ancient 7,000-mile 7,00 route from Venice to China. In Venice, Albania and Turkey, she fell fell in love with every place she visited. And we were treated to the odd Patsyism. Not wishing to gush too much, but with that soothing voice and wicked wit, Joanna ann could be my tour guide any any day. day. I might download her voice to my satnav right now. Just fabulous.
