King Richard won’t give up his crown
Adam Hathaway RICHARD WIGGLESWORTH runs out for his record-breaking 266th Premiership appearance today when SARACENS face GLOUCESTER – and insists there is more in the tank.
The 35-year-old scrum-half started professional life with Sale in 2002 as an 11-stone weakling but has bulked up to keep up with the modern game and bagged five Premiership titles, four with Sarries.
Wigglesworth overtakes the mark set by his former skipper Steve Borthwick but has vowed to carry on passing and set the bar too high for a couple of his current team-mates.
He said: “If it’s yours, you may as well make it tough to beat.
“I’ve got quite a few more in me I think and let’s make it a mark that if someone gets past it I’ll say ‘fair play’.”
BATH wing Joe Cokanasiga (below), who joins up with England in camp today, advertised his claims for an autumn international spot with a try as his side beat NORTHAMPTON 17-15 at the Rec.
Saints had the chance to level it but Dan Biggar’s conversion of a Tom Collins try hit the post. Flanker Sam Underhill, left out of the latest international training squad, went off in the second half with a stinger injury.
England prop Joe Marler saw yellow as HARLEQUINS crashed to a third defeat on the spin, losing 20-13 away at Premiership new boys BRISTOL, who had Ian Madigan booting 15 points to lift the rookies to seventh.
Nathan Hughes went from bad to good after being sin-binned in the first minute of WASPS’ 31-13 win at SALE.
The No.8 erased that by crashing over for the bonus point try from short range with two minutes left. TODAY’S GAME: Saracens v Gloucester, 3pm, BT Sport.
