Price has to throw in towel

- By Tom Hopkinson

DAVID PRICE suffered a demoralising defeat by Russia’s Sergey Kuzmin on the Anthony Joshuaalexander Povetkin undercard at Wembley.

The 35-year-old’s corner pulled him out at the end of round four because of a bicep injury to his right arm.

Price said: “I had a slight tear in the right bicep the last few weeks but I had to take the fight, and take a chance.

“I ruptured it in the second round. At the end of the fourth round it was barely moveable.

“If I’d snapped it I’d be out for 12 months at least.

“I took the fight at late notice. It’s really frustrating, I’m not used to coming in late notice as an opponent.

“But I’d love the opportunity to fight him again because our styes gel.”

Price was hoping to bounce back from his defeat by Povetkin in Cardiff in March.

Tough

That night he was stopped by a thundering punch.

Kuzmin, with a record of 12 fights and 12 wins, was another tough opponent.

But Liverpudlian Price started well with a couple of rousing combinations.

Kuzmin landed a hard blow to the body in round two and then caught Price with a jab to the face before another big blow to the chin.

Price, realising he was in trouble with his arm, really went for it in round three and both fighters traded blows as the excitement levels rose.

But it was then obvious as round four began that things weren’t going Price’s way as his output dipped big time.

Price returned to his corner at the end of the fourth and after a brief conversation with his team the towel was thrown in.

He wants to fight on, but that’s three defeats in his last four outings and he will have some big decisions to make now.
