Smart meters: a step towards a greener Britain
SMART meters are crucial building blocks for a more efficient and greener energy system. HEATHER AND FRANK’S SMART METER STORY… The cost of lighting amounts to around
- Swapping your lightbulbs is one of the easiest changes you can make that will improve your carbon footprint and make a difference to your monthly bills.
ADVERTISING FEATURE There are three different types of energy-saving light bulb. These are: CFLS (compact flourescent lamps), halogens and LEDS (light emitting diodes).
DIFFERENT BULBS – DIFFERENT EFFICIENCY
Traditional incandescent light bulbs are accepted as the least energy efficient bulb.
Of the newer more energy-efficient bulbs, the least efficient are the halogen type which use 20-30% less energy than a traditional bulb. Although CFLS are more expensive, they use 60-80% less energy than a traditional bulb and last much longer too. LEDS are the most efficient using up to 90% less energy than a traditional bulb.
RUNNING COSTS PER BULB A CFL bulb will cost you around £2.04 to run per year. And a LED bulb will cost around £1.71 per year.
Halogen bulbs are the most expensive to run, with an annual running cost of around £8.42 per bulb.
Unlike traditional meters, a smart meter is a digital, data-driven device that enables you to track how much energy you are using throughout your home. This close monitoring allows you
to make small changes, such as switching to more energy efficient lightbulbs, which are kinder to
the planet.
