No defence for Luhukay

- By JAMES CANDY at the Liberty Stadium

JOS LUHUKAY tore into his defenders after conceding twice in a minute to surrender the points to Swansea.

It looked like Marco Matias was going to lift the pressure on the Sheffield Wednesday boss when he punished Joe Rodon’s defensive blunder.

But Bersant Celina came on and scored for the Welshmen before setting up Wayne Routledge to turn the tables and leave Luhukay (right) on the brink.

“I am so angry, because the players are showing no proof of what we are doing,” said Luhukay, who has now won just one of his last 10 matches.

“We didn’t defend down our left side twice and that is not acceptable.

“How many times has this happened? When the players don’t learn from this situation then you won’t win games. Maybe the players can give the answers.”

The Swans looked ready to heap more pressure on Luhukay with an early spell of dominance led by the resurgent Routledge.

He failed to find the net after being set up by Oli Mcburnie, and they were almost made to pay on the stroke of half-time. The Swansea defence switched off at a corner to allow Lucas Joao to unleash a shot that flew just wide of a post.

The longer the Owls remained in the game, the more likely it looked they would plunder a goal against the run of play – and they gave themselves an opportunity to claim a rare away win after 63 minutes.

Rodon had got away with a defensive error when Joao curled a shot wide of an upright, but he was punished when he gave the ball away cheaply for a second time on the edge of his own box.

The 21-year-old was robbed of possession by Matias, who kept his cool to drill past keeper Erwin Mulder and into the back of the net.

But Celina came on after 66 minutes and played a key role in a quick-fire comeback.

First he placed the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Barrie Mckay slipped Connor Roberts in behind the Owls’ defence.

Then he lifted the ball over the back four for Routledge to control and run away from the defence and fire the ball through the legs of Cameron Dawson to pile the pressure on Luhukay.

“It was great for Bersant to come on, score and turn the game around for us,” said Swans boss Graham Potter.

“As a team, it shows there’s a mentality to recover from setbacks and mistakes.”
