Fury over Fury? One word...zara

-

THE Sports Personality of the Year award has split opinion like Brexit.

For instance, some people think Tyson Fury’s rebirth as a boxer, overcoming mental issues on the way, trumped all. Others trash his views on homosexuality and failed drug tests.

Personally, I fell out of love with the whole shooting match when eventer Zara Phillips lifted the crown 12 years ago.

She won the world title. And people voted for her. But for me, there is a limited field of competitors in that sport, which surely lessens the achievement compared with what others achieved that year.

I couldn’t see how the British public gave her the nod over boxer and two-time world champ Joe Calzaghe, who was unbeaten in 42 professional bouts and who had just been inducted into the sport’s hall of fame as one of the best pound-forpound fighters on the planet.

Others thought differently – and that’s the problem in a nutshell: It’s subjective.

So unless someone can come up with a ranking system, you might as well get used to an annual row over which so-called personality is more worthy every time we start hanging the tinsel on the tree.

PLEASED to see Everton have

incorporated safe standing into their new stadium planslans at Bramley-braml-moore Dock. Having seen the system for myself at Schalke’s stadiums, I’m sure it adds to the experience.exrience. The new Everton ground won’t ever recreate the Gwladysy Street End, but safe standing could give it an atmosphere allll

of its own.

ANTHONY MARTIAL’S agent says that Manchester United have sent contract offers to his client that “do not meet their expectations”. I can’t help but think there are people in power at Old Trafford who feel exactly the same way, viewed from their side of the fence. He needs than a goal at Cardiff to earn a

better deal.
